Words of Wisdom: One
"That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me, I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one." - John 17:21-22 (NKJV)

Yesterday I attended a beautiful wedding and witnessed two dear friends make a lifelong covenant of love with one another. As I watched them light the unity candle and take communion together, I was reminded of how that theme of unity is so prevalent in our faith. Unity found within the Trinity, our unity with Christ, unity of our wills with the direction of the Holy Spirit, unity within the body of believers, unity in marriage, and in family.

That made me think about the way my husband, Greg, ends a phone conversation with one of his saved friends. Instead of saying "Bye", "Later", or even "Get off the phone, knucklehead", he says "One."

I like that.

It speaks of a desire for unity in the body of Christ. A prayer that we will walk in love with one another as Christ told us to do.
Ephesians 4:1-5 says:
"I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

We are to be one because He is One. We are to be one because of our love for God and each other. We are to be one so that the world will know we are Christians by our love. So that they will desire to know Christ because of the love in action and unity we display in sincerity before them.

So whenever you see me write it, or hear me say it, you'll know that's what I'm speaking of. A hope that we will walk worthy of our calling and be a light to the world for Christ, in meekness, love, and unity.

So until next time,

One

I thank You, Lord, that in Your holiness and righteousness, You still desire unity with us. I thank You because of the incredible sacrifice Jesus made so that we could walk in unity with You. Please forgive us when we get caught up in factions and discord, and remind us what a healthy body is supposed to act like, so that we can display Your love to the world. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
